Joy: First Rose of Spring

It seems like just last week I was blogging about the Last Rose of Winter, but really it was over a month ago, February 11 to be exact. Anyway, we’ve had some wonderful warm weather here the past few days, and my Lady Banks rose has already begun to bloom:

One of the most spectacular things about Redlands is the jasmine, it grows crazy well here – the smell is just splendiferous. If you’ve been reading my blog for the past couple of weeks, you know that my University is in trouble financially – well today, the president resigned. How this helps the budget remains to be seen. I’m hoping this is the beginning of a more open dialogue to find ways to cut costs without so many jobs being cut. For now, I concentrate on smelling the jasmine.

  1. Beautiful rose, and I think I can smell the Jasmine from here! I really love the smell of Jasmine. I used to have a Double Delight rose at a house we rented. That bush bloomed so much – year round – that it was hard to find a time to prune it back. People used to come up into my yard to smell the flowers and one “little old lady” came up and picked one or two. THAT annoyed me a little, that she didn’t ask first, but they were luscious. I wish I could have brought the bush with me when I moved, but we moved into an apartment with no place to put it.

We certainly have been blessed with great weather the last few days, haven’t we?!?!?! I feel so bad for my kids/grandkids who live in the Midwest, Northwest and even southern Florida, but, hey, I didn’t tell them to move so far away from home!!!

I’m so sorry to hear that your school is having financial troubles, but it doesn’t surprise me. My daughter works at UC San Diego. She got a 4% pay cut, and, of course, the furloughs, but they were happy because their benefits and retirement (and those are REALLY good things), were not touched. She’s going for her Master’s in Library and Information Sciences at San Jose State online. She told me that her income could go up by $10,000/yr to start after she gets it! That’s a VERY good thing. She works at the large (Geisel/Dr. Seuss) library at UCSD. I guess all of the books are being digitized, not just there, but at Scripps Institute also. I don’t know where else, but I’m sure many other places. Her B.A. was in Classics Studies, so this it quite a turnaround for her, but she’s a smart cookie! (Luckily, she didn’t marry and have babies while still a teenager like her momma did…8-) I’ll keep my fingers crossed that things work out for your University.

    xoxo Linda

  2. Love jasmine – so pretty, and fragrant! I’m a bit jealous too – still waiting for the snow to melt off all the way 🙁

I’m glad you have a pretty yard and creative outlet to get you through this stressful work time! HUGS
