Maker’s Must: Angela Flicker from The Artists’ House

Hello all, I’d like to introduce you to Angela Flicker from the The Artists’ House.

1. Where are you located globally?

Salt Lake City, Utah

2. Where are you found online?

You can view my Etsy shop here or pictures of my work over on flickr

3. What is your favorite thing to make?

My favorite thing to make is applique quilts and wall art.  Things that add character, warmth, and charm to a space.

4. When you’re making it…

a. what do you love most about it?

I love the process of taking an idea, breaking it down into parts, problem solving around the parts that seem impossible, and creating something that is truly unique and “mine”.  I also love the realization that comes with a finished piece of work, after something is created, I often realize the deeper purpose or meaning behind what it was my hands were doing.  An example is my  “Rooms Hold Memories” quilt.  The idea behind this quilt is that the rooms in our homes hold memories, basically memories are painted on the walls, rubbed on the couch, and worn in the floor.  I didn’t realize how sentimental the scenes in this quilt were, until I was almost finished.  Weird how that happens 🙂

b. is there some part you really can’t stand?

Honestly, I hate the final stage of quilting the quilt tops.  Hopefully one day I can pay someone to do this aspect for me.

5. Do you consider yourself process or product oriented?

That’s a tough question.  Product ideas drive me to work, but the process is what I love.  The being in the moment, watching each step unravel.  Sewing really is therapeutic to me.  Yet at the same time, finished products are what drives that next idea, that next quilt, that next intense “process” session.  Hmmm, did the chicken or the egg come first, lol.

Thanks Angela! You definitely exemplify how quilts can be stories – something that is deep in the roots of quilt making!

And speaking of making, Angela has a genius idea of a blog hop that encourages us all to make and/or buy handmade gifts for the holidays. Each person have a chosen day to post ideas for gifts to make as well as hand made items they’d like to purchase, linking backwards and forwards to the peopl on either side of them – creating a huge handmade wishlist! I’m in for sure!

The deadline for participation isn’t until October 14th, we still have a little time to spread the word. Below are a few links directing you to places online that “A Crafty Holiday” has been mentioned:

Event details can be found here – A Crafty Holiday Blog Hop Event

If you’ve got a blog, we’d love to have you! Genius, Angela, genius!
