RAA Workshop: Pick Your Palette, Dye a Silk Scarf

I’m working with the Redlands Art Association to offer a workshop in my backyard dyeing studio so that you can learn how I dye silk scarves and dye your very silk scarf just the way I do! You will choose your favorite of my many different scarf palettes and I will walk you through mixing the colors, choosing the pattern you’d like to dye, and then dyeing the scarf. You could also describe what kind of color palette you’d like on a scarf, and I’ll work with you to make it happen.

Either way, you’ll leave with a gorgeous one-of-a-kind silk scarf, as well as an understanding of how to use fiber reactive dyes on silk. Make sure to wear work clothes, as dye splashes can stain. (If there’s time, you could dye a second scarf if you’d like)

When: Saturday, February 18 from 9 – 1 (bring lunch), with a rain date of Sunday, February 19.

Where: 1309 W Olive Ave.Redlands, CA 1.5 miles from RAA, grey house with white trim on the corner of Olive and Lakeside

RAA Workshop: Indigo Shibori: Experimenting with Pattern

Indigo is an ancient form of dyeing that is so much fun! There’s an almost magical process where white cloth is immersed into a vat of yellow liquid – when removed, it quickly turns from yellow, to green, to blue. Of course, it’s not magic, just a bit of chemistry! I’m working with the Redlands Art Association to offer a workshop in my backyard dyeing studio: In this class, we’ll explore different ways to add pattern to cloth using different “physical resist” techniques. After folding, clamping and tying some white fabric, you’ll immerse it in an indigo vat and see how those manipulations create fun patterns like these:

You’ll leave with 1 or 2 (for another fee) scarf in your choice of silk or cotton/silk blend patterned by your own hands, and instructions on how easy it is to make your own indigo vat with pre-reduced indigo.
