I love bags with lots of pockets, they help keep me organized! This messenger has a pocket for everything:

  • bag-size-comparison-web Need your smart phone handy? No problem – there’s an external pocket on each side just for it, so no matter which shoulder you use to carry your bag you’ll be able to get that call before it goes to voicemail!
  • Want easy access to a magazine? There’s an outside pocket across the back of the bag made just for that.
  • Where are your KEYS??? Losing my keys was the bane of my existence…until I started putting key leashes in my bags. Clip your keys to it and save 5 frantic minutes every morning.
  • With 2 more pockets under the flap, as well as several pockets inside (with instructions on how to customize these to your needs), there really IS a place for everything!
  • Carry lots of stuff? No worry, I’ve included directions for two sizes: big and MEGA! The mega-messenger can carry a large (15” or so) laptop, or it could make a fabulous diaper bag too. I’ve included information on how to add a water/baby bottle pocket on the outside of this mega-bag, making it uber functional.

The other half of a functional bag is a bag that is durable and has plenty of structure. Slouchy bags may look great, but when you’re searching for something in the depths of one, it can be a bit annoying. I show you how careful use of heavy weight fabric, interfacing and batting allow the bag to stand up (and open) by itself, making it much easier to search for that lost subway token or permission slip.

Not only is this bag functional, it is also beautiful. The flap is a great spot to show off your artistic stitching skills. I include several variations, but this is also for you to add your own creative vision. Whether it’s an awesome block you’ve just pieced, a blank canvas for your awesome free motion quilting skills or a gorgeous bit of fabric you’ve been hoarding for just the right occasion, the flap is the place to personalize with an artistic flair.

Skill level, construction time:

It is my hope that I’ve written these instructions so that even a new sewer can successfully make one (and I’m happy to answer any questions you may have, email me: Candy@CandiedFabrics.com). However, there are lots of steps involved in making this bag, you’re not going to be able to whip this out in an hour or two; perfection takes time! It takes me about 4-5 hours to make one, and I’ve made more than a couple of them 😉

jewel-tone-mod-houses-collage Mod House Combos

These sets of 6 fabrics have been created to make a set of my “Mod Houses”, cute little house ornaments constructed with Peltex (the stiffener used in baseball cap brims). The pattern appears in the “Holiday 2010-11″ issue of Quilting Arts Gifts. (Although of course, you are welcome to use them however you want!). They were also used to created the “Holiday Row Houses” on the cover of  Quilting Arts Gifts 2012-13.

These fabrics are sold as a group of 6 “fat quarters” (18″ x 22″) of quilter’s weight 100% mercerized cotton fabric with a thread count of 80 x 80 threads per inch. The fabrics are dyed with Procion MX Fiber Reactive Dyes by low water immersion dyeing; they have a lovely visual texture (illustrated in each collage below). All of my fabrics are washed several times with Synthrapol (a special dyer’s detergent), the last time in water that is at least 140 degrees, rinsed a final time in cold water (with a commercial fabric softener that has no detectable fragrance) and finally dryed and ironed. (So it has shrunk all it’s going to!)

I have tested and used my fabric extensively and never found it to run, however you should do a test yourself of this specific fabric to make sure it is colorfast for your washing process. My quilts are always washed in cold water in a machine using a Color Catchers® or similar product as a precaution to catch any loose dyes.

I dyed these groups in 4 yard lengths and I cut them to order, so choose the size of your fabric below. If you have any other questions, please don’t hesitate to email me before purchasing. Shipping within the US is by priority mail, $6.20 no matter how much fabric you order! (For international orders, please email me so I can invoice you the proper shipping).

Hardware for the Messengers

I know how hard it is to find hardware for bags – I’ve ended up buying some things from Hong Kong because I can’t source anything like them in the United States. I have information on the sources I use here. But if you’d like to avoid buying things from different sources, I’m offering hardware kits to go along with these patterns! Although I usually only ship priority mail, it makes more sense to use 1st class mail for such a low ticket item. So US shipping is 2$ for the first kit, and 1$ for each additional one. International folks Email Me first so I can figure out shipping for you.
