Packing up for Art for Heaven’s Sake

I’m packed and ready to go! I’ll teach my class in the morning and then hubby and I head allll the way up the street to the church where this show is held. We’ll set up the booth and then I should have time for dinner and a shower before the “gala opening”.

I was able to make 6 kindle covers and 5 ipad covers (I already had two):

One more convertible tote made with hand dyed fabric to go along with the 3 I made last month:

Yes, I was a busy girl this week! Fingers crossed we have good weather all weekend long. If you live close by, come on by, this is a great show!

Well, I am pretty pooped! Art in the Park is a 2 day affair, and because it starts at 9 AM and we set up the day of the show, Saturday starts VERY early. The weather was cool, which was awesome in that usually it’s really hot and that takes a lot out of me. The only thing is it was a bit TOO cool, and traffic was slow on Sunday. But, it’s a fun show, with lots of my RAA peeps, and lots of Mom’s out with their families. Here are some pix from my booth, yes I did get those pillows done in time! Woot! They look just like I had hoped on the shelf that hubby built.

Mother’s Day is Coming

With Easter so late this year, Mother’s Day is around the corner! Yikes!

One of the items on my to-do list is finally ready to go: I’ve added a fancy schmancy cart system to my online shop! Which means that I’ve got a way for you to see what’s been added to your cart while your shopping in the shop sidebar, and… I can have coupon codes!

So, I thought I’d use this new function to celebrate Mother’s Day. From now until Mother’s day (May 8th) take 10% off everything in my online shop, just enter the code “thanksmom” at checkout.

One Moment: I am not a manufacturer!

About a week ago, Chris Daly of Dye Candy sent me pix of a baby wearing a gift she’d purchased from me last fall, one of my ”Freshly Picked” baby outfits. Oh…my…GOODNESS…so CUTE! (And what an awesome quilt he’s lying on!)

For the umpteenth time, I wish I had been the maker I am now back when I had babies. (And I realize that I didn’t have time for that then! But still!) Anyway, I had a twinge when I saw them…because I had decided earlier this summer to stop making these to sell at shows. The problem with baby clothes is sizes, and gender. In order for me to keep enough sizes and colors in stock so I have on hand exactly the right color, size, and design for that particular person, well I’d have to turn into a baby clothes manufacturer. Although when I report my taxes to good old Uncle Sam I am a manufacturer…I most definitely am not one! There are many many aspects of making that are tedious, and this was true long before I started my little business, but I always keep my eye on the finish. If what I’m making still excites me, then I’m happy to keep on making. But these outfits weren’t cutting it – there were too many variables to keep track of! Now, I’ll still make outfits on commission, but as for making more for this Fall show season, nope, not gonna do it! Instead, I’ll move onto something else that will probably bring me a similar type of grief – wrap skirts! At least, because they’re a wrap, I won’t have to worry so much about size (which of course means they’re not big enough for ME to wear one…) but I had so much fun making one for Angie, I’ve just gotta make some more!

I’ve had this realization before, and I’m sure I’ll have it again, but one of my “inclinations” for this year is to keep developing as an artist - and when I dyed that skirt – both the act itself as well as playing with the finished product, I had that little zing inside that said “yes“! I need to listen for this and pay ATTENTION to it! And so my moment this week was realizing that I can’t make everything, I am NOT a manufacturer, I AM AN ARTIST!

The Shop is open!

Apologies to my RSS readers, I was working hard behind the scenes yesterday and today, and I inadvertently published some new pages as blog posts. I noticed my snafu quickly and fixed it, but I know that a few of you may have gotten odd, no text posts in your readers! Why was I working so hard behind the scenes, you ask? Well, I’ve learned how to sell things right here from my own website! WooHoo! Although Etsy makes things really easy, it also makes things really hard for someone like me. Even though I did some research before opening up an Etsy shop, I didn’t truly realize how difficult it would be for me to show my wares the way I’d like them to be shown! I’m very excited to be joining Art Wall Online next month, and used this deadline as an opportunity to figure out how to make PayPal “Add to Cart” buttons! Ooh, look, I even figured out how to make buttons with dropdown options!

Although I try to keep this blog about my process, not about selling, I just wanted to share a little “yeehah” with y’all, because that was more work than I though it was going to be (big surprise…) And if you take a look around the shop an see something confusing or odd, please feel free to drop me a line and let me know, I’d appreciate it!
