Modern Basics II Blog Blitz!

I’m so happy to be part of Amy Ellis’s blog blitz for her second book: Modern Basics II!

Modern Basics II Cover

Amy and I have been internet friends for years now, and I’ve loved watching her grow. Her ability to create SO MANY quilts in the midst of her busy family kitchen just boggles my mind! Just like her first book, Modern Basics II is filled with cleverly graphic quilts that are visually stunning. Amy’s directions are clear, and her she’s got some piecing tricks that are so clever!

The photography in this book is lovely. All the quilts are set on and around a beautiful bridge, the look so beautiful in that green woods! One of my favorite quilts is her “String Maze”:

What’s cool is that this is only ONE block! Depending upon how the blocks are rotated, you can create your own maze (or follow hers, it’s lovely!)

Amy and Martingale are hosting this blog blitz, all the blogger’s that are part of the blitz have been asked to share a tip or favorite tool. Amy has a central location where you can enter questions about these tips/tools to be eligible for a copy of her new book and other fun prizes as well! Click here for more details. (This is open until March 5 so you’ve got a a bit over a week to enter). Winners  are posted here.

My favorite tool are these blunt tip, curved thread snips from Havel. I use these all the time. The curved blade makes it easy to cut thread ends close to the surface – very helpful when I’m free motion machine stitching.

I’ve used the pointy version of these for years, but these with the blunt tips?? They are the bomb!!! I don’t stab myself anymore when I reach for them by my machine and grab them backwards by mistake (which happens all the time!)

Here are the rest of the folks participating in the blitz:

And here’s the form you can use to answer a quick question about each stop along the blitz. If you don’t get all the questions answered, never fear, you’ll be entered to win one of 15 electronic copies of her book. Those folks who get all the questions answered correctly are also eligible to win 1 of 3 autographed copies + fabric from Amy’s stash! Winners  are posted here.

  1. This looks a great book! I like the look of your snips too – do you know if Havel are available in the UK??

  2. I cannot agree with you more about the thread tips…the only problem with them is that I seem to misplace them all the time…so when my husband walked in while I was hunting for my pair, I told him, I want several of these for my Christmas stocking and that is what I found in it Christmas morning…altho I have several pair, there always seems to be one that I am hunting for…they are wonderful!!!!

    1. I couldn’t agree with you more! I’ve got 4 pair to aid in these being mis-placed…only problem is that just one of them is the blunt nosed, so I still will search for my favorite one! 😉

  3. I love those blut tip, curved thread snips. I have two, so I can carry one around with me when I am hand quilting and one near my sewing machine. I might just have to buy another just to have.
